The Group Training concept originated in the 1970s and is unique to Australia . Group Training companies place their apprentices and trainees with "host employers", usually small to medium-sized enterprises.

Today, 120 of these companies service the hospitality industry with over 21,000 apprentices and trainees nationwide.

Most group training companies receive a small amount of financial support from State and Federal governments to assist with administrative overheads.
