What is an Apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a training contract between an employer and an employee in which the apprentice learns the skills needed for a particular occupation or trade.

An apprenticeship or traineeship can be undertaken on a full-time or part-time basis and can be used as a valuable stepping stone to start a career in an industry you want to work in.

As an apprentice you can:

  • learn valuable, nationally recognised job skills
  • get paid while learning
  • combine formal training from a TAFE or training provider with workplace-based training

School Based Apprenticeships

Allow students in Years 11 & 12 to start an apprenticeship whilst still at school.  Students develop skills and get paid while getting ready for a career in the workforce, as well as working towards secondary graduation and industry recognised qualifications.  Both off and on the job training parts of school based apprenticeships are completed during school hours.  Students attend the workplace one day a week, TAFE one day a week and the rest of the working week (3 days) at school.

Apprenticeships generally last three years and employment prospects are excellent within Australia and overseas.

What is a Traineeship?

Traineeships combine work and training, like apprenticeships, but generally over a shorter period. Trainees quickly develop practical skills to make a positive contribution to their employer's productivity.

Traineeships are basically a workplace based training program, usually combining on-the-job training with off-the-job school or college based study.
