Group training is an employment and training agreement where an organisation employs apprentices and trainees, and then places them with 'host employers'. The group training organisation (GTO) is responsible for the quality and continuity of the apprentices’ and trainees’ employment and education and also provides enhanced mentoring services to support apprentices during their training.
Group training has been a feature of Australia’s apprenticeship and traineeship system for over 20 years. The promotion of training in traditional trades and employment of apprentices and trainees have made group training highly valued.
Today, 120 of these companies service the industry with over 21,000 apprentices and trainees nationwide. Most group training companies receive a small amount of financial support from State and Federal governments to assist with administrative costs.
HGT General Manager Iain McDougall is currently National Chairman of Group Training Australia Ltd
